What long time customer Gary Gagliano says about his Waller Range Bag...
from Gary Gagliano

"I have a green Waller Range Bag like the one I ordered today, used it a lot over the last 15 years, simply the best, still works fine and in perfect shape, I just needed another.
Police Ranges, Military Ranges, Gun Club, property trips to my private range, never let me down, what a great product.
Thank you,

Gary Gagliano

SOFT SAFE
from Chief Tim Julian Springfield NH PD

It is rare that you get what you pay for.

I feel, with my new Soft Safe that I've gotten much more than I paid for.

It was apparent by something simple like the velcro that holds the carry handle together. It is INDUSTRIAL strength! When I SECURED my M4 rifle with the interior straps and hefted the case, there was no bending and "flopping" around. My rifle was secure.
What a fine product.
Thank you,

Tim Julian

FIELD BAGS
from Chief David P. Cahill Sunapee NH PD

Dear Waller & Son,

Recently I purchased three of your field bags for each of my firearms instructors. We were very pleased and excited to find that each of these bags are covered by a lifetime guarantee as it always seems police officers are very tough on ALL their equipment. I recently used my field bag at our department firearms qualification day and was able to contain ALL items needed, including three firearms that I would qualify with and 250 rounds for those weapons. I was very pleased with construction of the field bag and its interior outline that allows movable pockets to accomadate many different sized items.
I am very pleased with the Waller Field Bag. Keep up the good work.

WallerŽ Original Field Bag
by Tim L. Walker
www.photographycorner.com

The Original Field Bag, created by W. Waller & Son, Inc. is the perfect-sized bag for the beginner/amateur photographer. At 15"(W) x 6"(D) x 9"(H), it is small enough that is it easy to store and carry around, but large enough that you could bring your camera body, 3-4 lenses, a flash and accessories with ease. The urethane-backed, 1,000 denier CorduraŽ outer shell is water resistant, making the bag so light, it even floats (though I didn t test this out myself, though according the manufacturers website, that bag does actually float!) The interior of the bag is composed of high density, closed cell, rigid foam protective structural panels, helping protect your equipment from damage in addition to keep the equipment from moving around and rubbing and knocking against each other while in transit. The bottom of the bag is well reinforced and will stand up even to the most demanding of photographers.

The bag itself has a leather carrying handle in addition to a sturdy shoulder strap with a non-slip grip. The shoulder strap can be easily unattached if not needed, though the fact that it has an adjustable length makes it even more useful. The front pouch is protected by a lip all the way around the zipper to avoid water and dirt to get inside. The pouch has an elastic strap inside perfect for holder film canisters as well as an expandable pocket sealed with Velcro. There is a zippered pocket on the back as well, ideal for storing CDs or a field notebook. The main compartment has adjustable panels, perfect for securing your equipment, as well as two straps attached to the roof of the compartment suitable for attaching a large lens or a small tripod. The main compartment also features a flat panel on the front and the back, creating extra storage space for field materials and even media storage.

Overall, the Original Field Bag is a great choice for the single-camera, amateur photographer. It s lightweight yet durable construction is a great starting place for the photographer who has enough gear to need a field bag, but not enough to warrant something larger. All in all, a great starter bag for any amateur photographer.

GUIDE TO USEFUL GUN GEAR
by Duane Thomas
Handguns - Dec. '98

"Let's take a look at a few of the products that have, over my years of dealing with firearms on a daily basis, impressed me as being among the most useful handgun accessories:"

WALLERŽ RANGE BAGS
If the true test of a product's usefulness is how often you use it, then if you're a dedicated shooter you'll find a quality range bag your single most valuable accessory. My personal example of this piece of equipment is the Waller Original Range Bag, an extremely well-made, well-designed, large shooter's bag. Frankly, I use my ORB so frequently and rely on it so much I almost can't imagine being without it.

The Waller ORB is nine inches tall by 11 inches wide by 26 inches long. This is large enough to hold a lot of gear, but still small enough to easily carry. It features a large center compartment with six moveable interior partitions that can be adjusted to the user's specific needs or even removed altogether. All six sides of that main compartment are padded to give the bag structure so it retains its shape even when loaded with heavy stuff and to protect the bag's contents. There is a long, zippered compartment on the front of the bag, as well as two squarish zippered pockets, one on each side.

The bag is very attractive in appearance, the quality of the materials and workmanship used in its construction is evident. The ORB is so sturdy it can double as travel luggage. I use mine as a suitcase when traveling by plane. For carrying the bag over extended periods, the ORB comes equipped with a removable wide nylon carrying strap. The bags durable construction, capacious interior and excellent design all combine to allow it to adapt to non-shooting carrying chores.

W. Waller & Son's line of nylon shooter's bags, of which the ORB is only one example, is often referred to by connoisseurs as "the Rolls-Royce of nylon gun gear." Waller range bags are imaginatively designed, constructed of the finest materials and wonderfully well put together. The have my highest recommendation.

LOST SHROUD OF THE SNUBBIES
by Mike Oakes
Guns - Aug. '97

This innovative add-on enhances the concealability of your snub-nose .38.

Short-barreled revolvers have always enjoyed certain popularity. They are reliable, chambered in effective self-defensive calibers and extremely compact. The combination has proved to be a winner for millions of gun-toting Americans over the years.

The oft-quoted axioms of the defense gurus include a line something like, "The first rule of defensive handgunning is: Carry a gun." The full-sized handgun may rest undisturbed in the gun cabinet while the compact snubbie tours the town on the hip of its owner, carefully concealed. The question that begs asking is: Can this weapon be brought quickly to bear in an emergency?

Decades ago it became apparent that drawing a revolver from the depths of concealment was often difficult. The spur of the hammer can tear into a jacket-lining, hook onto the edge of a purse, seize the inside of a pocket and generally fail to draw in a timely manner. This brought about "hammerless" revolvers, bobbed hammers and the hammer shroud.

The hammer shroud was a slick alternative to hammerless revolvers. It allowed the user to easily thumbcock the weapon but still shielded the hammer from contact with potentially-clinging objects. This was accomplished by forming a smooth, metal envelope to encapsulate the hammer. This envelope had a narrow notch that ran vertically allowing just the merest portion of the hammer to protrude.

Colt first introduced the hammer shroud for their D-frame revolvers decades ago but they were discontinued in recent years leaving owners of Colt D-frames no easy alternative for snag-free operation.

Now W. Waller & Son, Inc. of New Hampshire has reintroduced the hammer shroud for the Colt D-frame revolvers, and has developed a lone of Hammer shrouds to fit the popular Smith & Wesson J-Frame revolvers as well. Owners of S&W's Model 35, 37, 60 and Lady Smith revolvers can now join the owners of Colt's Detective Special, Agent, Cobra and the other D-frames in having a snag-free option for their snubbie.

Offered in blued and stainless finishes, the Waller hammer shrouds require a minimum of gunsmithing for installation and most competent gunsmiths should be able to easily perform the necessary drilling and tapping.

With the hammer shroud fitted to your revolver you will enjoy the silky smooth, snag-free draw it provides. You will also enjoy the reduced wear and tear on your belongings.

SOFT SAFE
by Mike Oakes
Guns - Nov.'97

For carrying guns with safety and convenience, nothing beats Waller's unique carrying case.

When FBI agents approached Waller several years ago, they were looking for a new hybrid in gun-toting technology. Waller's Bob Schwartz explained, "They told us they wanted a discreet package that doesn't look like a gun (case) for rifles, shotguns or SMGS. Then they said they wanted it to be lockable and child-proof because they might need to take a gun home around the kiddies or transport it on a commercial airliner.

"A black, gun-shaped cordura bag with external mag-pouches is what everyone had then and that is what they wanted to avoid." After long months of testing, Waller produced a patented soft gun case that more than satisfied the order.

The case was named the "Long Gun Soft Safe" and featured a smooth, non-gun, external appearance, a keyed safety locking system and two-ply aluminum heat and fire shielding. Offered in 36' and 46' lengths, Soft Safe cases have seen use transporting a variety of long guns, but have also been used to transport numerous other items such as computer and video products where the heat-shielding was highly valued.

Mobile Gun Safe

The compact 36' Soft Safe is a perfect size for safely storing and transporting a variety of carbine-sized long guns (CAR-15, Marling Camp Carbine etc.) and most shotguns, such as the Remington model 870, with the barrel detached. Beneath its demure exterior, the Compact Long Gun Soft Safe sports a long, padded pouch for storing a detached shotgun barrel, four padded mag pouches, and two large mesh pockets. Three large hook-and-loop retention straps secure the long gun rigidly in place where the ample interior padding protects it from contact with the magazines, barrel, or whatever may be stored in the exterior compartments.

A blend of synthetic and natural materials are evident in the Soft Safe's construction, with a cordura-type nylon material providing an extremely water-resistant outer shell, and a sturdy blend of nylon and thick leather forming the backbone of the case.

The nylon carry handle is wrapped with leather for comfortable carry, and the straps wrap around the entire case to support the weight evenly. Sturdy, cross-stitched fittings tie into each side of the bag for clipping the provided shoulder strap, allowing vertical carry and across chest or back carry.

The mild-mannered appearance of the Compact Long Gun Soft Safe conceals many advanced features and well-engineered durability worthy of investigation by any shooter.

DRESSED FOR PEACE/ARMED FOR TROUBLE
by D.K. Pridgen
Guns & Weapons for Law Enforcement - 1995 Equipment Annual

My first contact with W. Waller & Son was testing one of their famous Range Bags several years ago. I was very impressed with the quality and construction and decided to see if it was carried over to other products.

I received a rifle/shotgun case from Waller, the Long Gun Soft Safe made of 1000 denier Cordura nylon, with leather reinforcement on the handles and lock location. This case is, as I said, well constructed and designed with a number of interesting features. It is available in 36 and 46 inch lengths.

The case I received was the one for shorty rifles and shotguns. It has a lightweight (200 denier) nylon liner. Inside are two zippered net pockets for odds and ends and six Velcro pockets for magazines. The last pocket is a long one that can carry a barrel or cleaning rods. Velcro straps keep the long gun firmly situated inside the Soft Safe.

The entire case is well padded with what feels like at least 3/8 inch closed cell foam that will protect the long gun, even when thrown in the trunk of a squad car along with all the other associated junk. In addition, an internal, double ply, aluminized heat/fire shield is included in the construction.

As with all of Waller's products, a key lock is integral with the case. It encloses the zipper when closed. This restricts the curious and according to the President of W. Waller, Robert Schwartz, it should meet the requirement that a gun should be kept in a lockable case. Furthermore, it does meet federal requirements for interstate transportation of firearms. Quality and excellent features make the Long Gun Soft Safe an excellent buy for anyone.

SOFT SAFE PISTOL CASE
By Carl E. Krupp
Self-Reliant Living - Issue #159

Keeping a Gun Safely

For years we have urged readers to keep their guns safely stored, and yet at the ready. We have, from time to time, suggested several ideas to help you, such as the gun rack written about several years ago. But now there is a product that will make it all so easy…the Soft Safe from W. Waller & Son, Inc.

SOME BACKGROUND

W. Waller & Son, Inc. has been known for years for their quality bags for airline pilots. More recently, they have extended their talent to pistol range bags, one for two pistols and everything else you need on the range, and a giant bag that holds four pistols plus accessories.  THE SOFT SAFE Soft Safe shares many of the fine qualities their other bags enjoy, such as heavy Cordura water repellent exteriors, padded interiors covered with Oxford nylon cloth, a nylon zipper that won't scratch fine gun bluing…and most important, a unique case lock.

CHILD AND ADULT PROOF LOCK

Now nothing is indestructible, but this lock will keep the gun safe from all but the most determined thieves. In order to break the lock you would have to cut the thick plastic tab that covers the zipper tab and holds it locked in place. At this point, it would be easier to take a sharp knife and cut the fabric to gain entry!  Further, the lock uses a special tumbler (circular) key, as found on pay phones and other special applications. It is not the difficulty of duplicating that intrigues us, but rather the fact that the key can be inserted in the dark, turned until it drops in, and then opened, something very hard to do with a standard flat key. Here is a lock that is secure, and yet easy to unlock in the dark.  By the way, combination locks are less desirable for kid-proofing guns, for they only have a limited number of possibilities, and kids have unlimited time, patience and talent. We have never seen a combination lock that a kid couldn't open, if you gave him a week!

IDEAL FOR GUN TRANSPORT

Many states require that handguns be in a LOCKED case and carried in the trunk of a car before coming into their state. This case is ideal, for you can carry the gun into your motel room with you at night, and back to the car in the morning, and each time you move the gun it will be in a locked case!

BEAUTIFUL TO LOOK AT

In addition to being the best designed locking gun case, the Soft Safe is also beautifully made.  There is a double ply aluminized heat/fire protection shield to protect the firearm from the effects of fire. The fabric of the Soft Safe is beautiful, heavy Cordura, in your choice of colors; black, grey, navy or red.  The interior padding assures that the gun will be protected from what ever you put in the pocket on the other side of the case, which holds up to five magazines for a semi-auto, or several speedloaders for a revolver.   There is a genuine leather strip inside the case to give it rigidity. Never before have we seen a case where leather was used except for decoration!  All stitching is done with heavy nylon thread, assuring that the case will last many years.

TWO SIZES TO CHOOSE FROM

There are two sizes of the Soft Safe. The smaller of the two is just right for most handguns, as it will comfortably hold a semi-automatic pistol with up to a 5" barrel. This includes the Colt .45 and all its clones, all of the Smith & Wesson pistols, and almost all other semi-autos. It also will carry a revolver with 4" barrel. The case size is 9" x 12".  The larger Soft Safe is 9" x 18" and is designed for long barreled target or hunting pistols. Buying more than one Soft Safe at a time, so you have a safe place for each of your handguns, saves you money for shipping.  If you have children, their protection is worth this small cost.  If you transport a firearm across state lines, or if your state has tough transport laws, then again, having a case that meets the federal requirements for interstate transportation is worth the price.

WALLER RANGE BAG
Quartermaster Column
by Roy Huntington
GUNS Magazine - December 1999

The WallerŽ Signature Series are the most impressive range bags I've ever seen, period. Not only are they loaded with features that are practical in the real world, the construction is accomplished peerlessly. The fabric combines the texture and feel of traditional #8 Cotton Duck with the durability of one of today's wonder fabrics. The side panels are full-grain leather; no "genuine vinyl" here. It is supple, richly colored and smells like great leather should.

Gussets, piping and solid brass hardware hearkens back to turn-of-the-century travel cases on their way to Europe aboard luxury liners. Yet touches like a rubberized bottom update the design and protect the contents from damp ground. A Signature bag is an investment that will no doubt last your lifetime and speak volumes about who you are. It's available in Stealth Black, Racing Green, Firecracker Red and appropriately … British Khaki.

RANGE BAG ROUNDUP
By Richard Verdi
Combat Handguns - May 2000

Last but by no means least is the only bag I can personally attest to from long term use. I purchased a Waller Original Range Bag about 7 years ago and it is a purchase I have never regretted. In those ensuing years my Waller has been on and off airplanes, in and out of car trunks and on more ranges than I can remember. Its been dirty, muddy, dropped and thrown and it still looks and works great. A couple of years back I caught and ripped the side pocket, pulling it off a baggage carousel. I sent the bag back to Waller, requesting a repair and asking them to bill me since I ripped it through my own carelessness. I got the bag back the next week, repaired, and not only was there no bill they stuck a Waller hat in the Bag! Great customer service is as important as the product itself and these folks treat their customers' right. The Waller Original Range Bag that I have is virtually identical to the new sample that Waller sent me for this review, and the first thing you notice is that Waller did not design the bag around the "Tactical Look". They designed the bag to be functional and they succeeded. The Waller appears smaller than many of the bags but by virtue of its design neatly holds as much as bags that appear much larger. It features a roomy main compartment with three moveable partitions that allow you to customize the inside of the bag to suit your equipment, with two padded partitions for pistol storage. The underside of the bag lid is equipped with two large hook and loop straps to hold a spotting scope. Two large end compartments can swallow up a variety of equipment including muff type ear protection. A large compartment along the front of the bag contains six elastic loops for holding spare magazines. On the back of the bag is a zippered pouch that will hold an 8-1/2" x 11" notebook or spare targets. The Waller is made of 1000 Denier DuPont Cordura, Waller then coats the back of the fabric with a heavy coat of urethane for added water repellency. This high level of construction is why many refer to the Waller as the "Cadillac" of range bags, a moniker they are totally deserving of. The Waller Original Range Bag is offered in five colors-Black, Grey, Navy, Green and Red. Two of my departments Firearms Instructors, in addition to myself, have Wallers and the only thing they ever argue about is who has the nicest color. They both agree they have the nicest range bag. Certainly not the cheapest, but the best usually isn't.
